Synopsis:
Is This the Hill You Wish You’d Died On? is a ghost story for people who don’t believe in ghosts. Taylorbeth, a young Newfoundland woman in her early 20s, visits the grave of her great-great-great-grandmother Theresa in an old St. John’s graveyard. Taylorbeth has always admired the story of Theresa, who was shunned by her Irish Catholic family for marrying a Protestant in 1870s St. John’s. She looks to Theresa as an example of resilience and courage. But when Theresa actually appears, Taylorbeth (who doesn’t believe in ghosts) has to confront the many ways in which her values and Theresa’s don’t align. Theresa is soon joined by three more family ghosts, and the stories these women tell Taylorbeth about their lives echo and sometimes clash with the family stories she's heard about them; she finds herself angry at these women she has always admired. When the ancestral ghosts are joined by another from Taylorbeth's own recent past, as well as her very-much-alive mother (who also doesn’t believe in ghosts), Taylorbeth has to question what, if anything, the living can learn from the dead – and vice versa.
About the playwright:
Trudy Morgan-Cole is a writer and educator from St. John's. Her historical fiction focuses on the marginalized voices of women in Newfoundland history; her latest work, the Cupids Trilogy, explores the experiences of English women settlers in the early 17th century.
Primarily a novelist, Trudy made her first foray into writing for stage with The Mirror, a play about pioneering Newfoundland suffragist Armine Nutting Gosling, which was produced by Persistence Theatre Company in 2021. Is This the Hill You Wish You'd Died On? is her second play and one of her most personal pieces of writing, drawing on stories from her family history. Trudy is delighted to have a talented team led by director Sharon King-Campbell bring this play to life in its first staged reading.
