The Importance of Being Foolish
Written by Amy House & Berni Stapleton
Produced by Girl Power Inc.
Runtime: 75 Minutes
Synopsis:
This is vintage Amy & Berni. “When we first began writing comedy together, there weren't very many companies or opportunities for us,” say the playwrights. “So we decided to create our own.” In The Importance of Being Foolish, you’ll meet them as retired (unemployed) actors, living in Lady Mackerel’s Retirement Home for Lesser Known Actors, replaying their favourite (delusional) roles, taking on multiple characters, and in general just spreading the laughs and joy.
About the playwrights:
Amy House is a household name in Newfoundland and Labrador. Born in Stephenville, Amy got involved in theatre in her last year of high school and has never recovered, she’s had that bug ever since. A comic with an irrepressible fondness for improvisation, Amy is a much sought-after performer for many special events and private functions. She’s one of the most genuinely funny people you are likely to meet. She also wears many hats.
Over the span of her career, Amy has been a performer, comedienne, writer, producer, director and arts advocate. Amy recently completed fifteen years as Artistic Animateur of RCA Theatre Company at the LSPU Hall Theatre in St. John’s. There, she was at the heart of the development and production of over 50 original plays by Newfoundland playwrights. She has worked in television production with Tyndrum Media Inc. as the Host of From Inside the Circle as well as Audience Relations and Communications Director.
Berni Stapleton is a playwright, author, and actor. She is the Artistic Director of Girl Power Inc. She is co-artistic director of the Grand Falls-Windsor Theatre Project. She has spent her career making beautiful theatre in unexpected places. She has had almost forty plays professionally produced in Canada and beyond, including Ireland, the U.K. and New York. Her plays include the iconic Offensive to Some, Woman in a Monkey Cage, Brazil Square, and The Pope and Princess Di.
Bernardine was writer-in-residence at Memorial University in 2019 and developed and taught their first introductory course in playwrighting. She has a new one person show in development called Antidote for Life: Memory, Madness, and the Performing Artist. She lives in St. John’s with rescue beagles Georgie Girl and Tiggy Duff.
