Bottleneck
Written by Michaela Sheldon

Cast:

BRIANNA - Cheney Emberg
CORDELIA - Bailey Jackson
STEPHANIE - Lonni Patey

Runtime: 20 Minutes

Synopsis:
Brianna is a young female-identifying teen who lives in a messy, albeit hoarded, house. Her mother is loving, compassionate, and good-natured, but she is severely depressed. As a result, Brianna finds herself unable to cope with her living conditions. She is stuck in a difficult situation when she is required to bring a friend over to the house... This is a story about the unidealized experience of a young woman raised by a single mother who struggles with mental illness.

About the playwright:
Michaela Sheldon is a Grenfell Theatre Program alumni (Hamlet, Agamemnon, and Under Milk Wood). TV credits include, Hudson & Rex, Astrid and Lilly Save the World and NIFCO’s First Time Filmmakers Short, The Old Man. She has theatrically performed with PerSIStence Theatre Company's Votes for Women 100 project (A New World For Women), Xchange Theatre Works (By the Bog of Cats public reading), Güd Productions (Güd Guffaw), How To Make Bread (Dir. Bailey Jackson) and The River (Double Sure Theatre Co-Op).

Florence Button

Runtime: 75 Minutes

Synopsis:
This play is about the lives of eight women ranging in age from teens to sixties, and speaks of their lives as they worked alongside the men who pursued the Labrador fishery out of the 'rooms' on the south east coast of Labrador.

About the playwright:
Florence Button has a profound interest in NL Culture and Heritage. Research for a Museum exhibit detailing the Labrador fishery, eventually resulted in the later writing of "Connecting Rooms: A Tribute". The work of the women participants of this fishery, seemed to have a low profile. This play is the result of further personal research and the contribution of more than a century of the work of many mighty women.

St. John’s is home to a rich, diverse, and vibrant urban Indigenous community. Located on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Beothuk, the lands and waters in and around the City have traditionally served as a gathering place for the Mi’kmaq. The broader region of Newfoundland and Labrador continues to be home to diverse Indigenous Peoples, including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. We honour and pay respect to the past, present, and future caretakers of these territories.

We also must acknowledge the labour theft extracted from people of African descent, used to build European wealth and economies globally, and in the Canadian nation state, including Newfoundland and Labrador’s shipbuilding and cod fishery industries, through the violence of trans-Atlantic enslavement.

We thank both First Light and the office of the Vice-Provost of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism at Memorial University for crafting and sharing these words that provide us with important perspectives.
