I Dropped A Stitch
Written by Janet Edmonds

Cast:
Petrina Bromley
Darryl Hopkins
Alexis Koetting

Una Hill McMullin
Andrew Tremblett

Runtime: 90 Minutes

Synopsis:
After the death of her future daughter-in-law, a woman must reconcile her grieving conscience with her loyalty to her son who may have committed the murder. The final and unfinished play by the amazing Janet Edmonds who was working on the script just before her death in 2017. The script was finished by Robert Chafe in her stead. Join us for a staged reading of a play that is fierce and uncompromising, just like its author.

Content warning:
I Dropped A Stitch includes strong language and themes, and moments of violence and discussions of violence.

About the playwright:
Janet Edmonds worked in film and radio but her first love was the theatre. She worked with many organizations across the province including Stephenville Theatre Festival, Rising Tide, Resource Centre for the Arts, Theatre Newfoundland Labrador, Newfoundland Young Peoples Theatre, Shakespeare by the Sea, and Perchance Theatre. Her first play, On the Hitch, was a critical hit, and displayed her sharp and dark humour and deep artistic curiosity. Her second play, I Dropped a Stitch, follows this path: compassionate, fierce, questioning. She passed in 2017 before this play could be completed. We are delighted to present the play in its current draft, as per Janet’s wishes.

St. John’s is home to a rich, diverse, and vibrant urban Indigenous community. Located on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Beothuk, the lands and waters in and around the City have traditionally served as a gathering place for the Mi’kmaq. The broader region of Newfoundland and Labrador continues to be home to diverse Indigenous Peoples, including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. We honour and pay respect to the past, present, and future caretakers of these territories.

We also must acknowledge the labour theft extracted from people of African descent, used to build European wealth and economies globally, and in the Canadian nation state, including Newfoundland and Labrador’s shipbuilding and cod fishery industries, through the violence of trans-Atlantic enslavement.

We thank both First Light and the office of the Vice-Provost of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism at Memorial University for crafting and sharing these words that provide us with important perspectives.
