ABOUT THE SHOW:
Iphis is a Man is a coming-of-age story about your average fifteen-year-old boy learning what it means to be a man in an ancient Greece that looks and acts a lot like our modern-day world. Only difference? Iphis was born with a vagina. As he tries to understand who he is, he must answer to the crush he’s suddenly betrothed to, his pseudo-psychic mom, his nut-farming dad, and a (mostly unhelpful) goddess in drag. Iphis is a Man is a modern retelling of Ovid’s ancient myth of Iphis and Ianthe, a TYA show meant for anyone 14+.
CONTENT WARNINGS:
Language, innuendo, some intimacy between Iphis and Ianthe (kissing, touching) and some obscene gestures.
ABOUT THE PRODUCTION:
Iphis is a Man is written and directed by Cheney Emberg, and produced by PerSIStence Theatre Company and Capacity Theatre. Rehearsals will take place in St. John's, NL from late October through November of 2026, with performances from November 26th to November 28th. This production will pay industry-standard rates for actors.

IPHIS (eye-fiss)
18 and older playing 15. A boy who is figuring it out. In ~like~ with Ianthe. Must be played by a genderdiverse or trans masc actor.
TELETHUSA (tell-eh-thuse-uh) / LIGDUS (lig-diss)
Actor of any gender, must have a strong sense of physical comedy. Plays Iphis’s overprotective mom (Telethusa) AND reserved dad (Ligdus). Telethusa claims to have "visions", cares deeply for her son and Dimitra; she has no poker face, brutally honest. Ligdus is who he is.
DIMITRA (dim-eee-truh)
Iphis’ nurse. Rational, grounded, loving, butch. Cares deeply for Iphis and Telethusa.
IANTHE (eee-ann-thuh)
18 and older playing 15. A girl in ~like~ with Iphis. Opinionated, forward. Young for her age but thinks herself to be much older.
ENSEMBLE: Crypteia (crip-tee-uh) / Cato (cay-toe) / Ambrose (am-broze) / Postman
Character actor to play a soldier who loves to kill people, a postman, and two boys who like talking about jerking off. Must have comedic timing. Any gender. LOOKING FOR THOSE WITH PUPPETEERING EXPERIENCE OR COMFORTABLE LEARNING TO PUPPETEER MORE THAN ONE PUPPET AT ONCE.

Character Description:
ISIS (eye-siss)
Serves cunt. Goddess of magic, healing, motherhood, and the afterlife. Her name means “The Throne.” She is resolute, perpetually in a rush, and unconcerned with other people’s opinions of her. Highly comfortable with improv/ crowd work to vamp at top of show.
