Casting Call - Indigenous Woman

PerSIStence Theatre is casting for our upcoming production of STOLEN SISTERS, written and directed by L’nu playwright Leahhdawn Helena.

STOLEN SISTERS is a one-woman show that explores the lives and legacy of the Indigenous Beothuk People of Newfoundland, told through three generations of Beothuk women and girls - Oubee, Shawnidithit, and Santu Toney - each of whom exist and live on through historical record. All three characters will be played by one actor.

We are scheduling readings to cast one (1) actor, who identifies both as a woman (19+) and a status or non-status member of an Indigenous community/nation in Newfoundland and/or Labrador.

This contract takes place in St. John’s for rehearsals from July 18-August 8, 2022; in St. John’s for performances in the Heart Garden of Government House from August 9-August 21, 2022; and on tour to locations on the West Coast of the province August 31-September 6, 2022. The show is also planned to tour to locations in Labrador and Newfoundland in 2023 (separate contract, dates TBD).

Pay is $1,100/week. The costs of travel and accommodation can be negotiated for those who live outside of St. John’s.

Auditions are by appointment only and sides (readings from the play) will be provided in advance. Auditions will take place in person or via Zoom for those who live outside St. John’s. They will take place June 17-19. Previous acting experience preferred but NOT required.

Please mail info@persistencetheatre.com to request an audition appointment or for more information. You can also call 709-743-4274.

Ongoing Opportunities - Professional Theatre

Through professional theatre and related initiatives, PerSIStence Theatre responds to the persistent and universal need for promoting, understanding and embracing the core beliefs of feminism.

Auditions are held periodically and as needed to cast professional actors for our activities - feel free to send us a headshot and resume (PDF format preferred) to info@persistencetheatre.com.

Both Equity and non-Equity actors are welcome to apply.

INDIGENOUS LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

It is vital to support the Indigenous people and communities of Newfoundland and Labrador. As settlers, we must work toward understanding our privilege, as beneficiaries of both historical and ongoing colonialism, and acknowledge the horror and injustice perpetrated against the original inhabitants of North America.

We acknowledge the territory upon which we gather as the ancestral and unceded lands of the Beothuk and the island of Newfoundland as the ancestral homelands of the Mi’kmaq and Beothuk. We recognize the Inuit of Nunatsiavut and NunatuKavut and the Innu of Nitassinan, and their ancestors, as the original people of Labrador.

We recognize the historic and ongoing presence and influence of Indigenous people in Newfoundland – recorded and unrecorded, acknowledged and unacknowledged. We recognize that Newfoundland and Labrador has a place in the ongoing legacy of colonial violence, including, but not limited to, the genocide of the Beothuk people, the horrors of the Residential School system, and far too many Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Children.

We encourage all to join us in learning more about and supporting the Indigenous people and communities of Newfoundland and Labrador. A great place to start is by connecting with First Light an organization that provides programs and services rooted in the revitalization, strengthening and celebration of Indigenous cultures and languages in the spirit of trust, respect, and friendship.
